Harry’s Story
Born in 1996 with Prader-Willi Syndrome, poor muscle tone was a significant issue in his early years. He stood with the aid of a frame and was mobilised in a wheel chair. He was also diagnosed with a slight double curvature of the spine. At age 6, his poor muscle tone was addressed via daily growth hormone injections (which continue to this day). It was predicted that the growth hormone would eventually impact on his curvature by accelerating its rate.
In order to slow down the curvature, Harry was referred to SpineCor for a back brace assessment. At the time of the assessment, we weren’t keen on it, we imagined it to be a rigid plastic mannequin type torso! But when we met with Mr Mills, he demonstrated how the brace would be worn, and put our minds to rest. We met with Mr Mills for regular reviews throughout the time that Harry wore the SpineCor brace. The reviews were reassuring, kept us in touch with Harry’s clinical progress and were always a pleasant experience due to Mr Mills’ professional, informative and approachable manner.
The brace turned out to be a comfortable and easy to wear state of the art design which, to our astonishment, Harry took to immediately. Teaching other family members to assist Harry in putting on his brace was straightforward and Harry was always ready to advise them.
Another significantly positive aspect was that wearing the brace in hot conditions didn’t cause Harry to overheat, amazing as the hypothalamus is unable to regulate his body temperature and he tends to overheat even in mild temperatures. He wore the SpineCor brace for 11 years, and it did what it was intended to do. His curvature was significantly slowed despite the daily onslaught of growth hormones and it wasn’t until the age of 17 that it was assessed as no longer clinically effective and that a corrective operation was required.
At 17, Harry was physically, emotionally and mentally strong, he was far more able to deal with his operation than had it been required when he was younger. It is entirely due to the success of the brace that the operation was able to be delayed to the point in his life when he was best able to deal with it. Wearing the brace aided Harry’s mobility and also his self confidence. He was able to walk his dog, play, run and dance. He even regularly participates in regional disabled athletics championships and always returns home clutching a hoard of medals.
Harry’s quality of life, normalisation, happiness and fulfilment have undoubtedly been massively helped by his back brace. Of course, his well being always impacts upon us too and we are so very grateful to SpineCor for helping to give Harry an active and fulfilling childhood and teenage years!
